Racers Take Two in Season-Opening Doubleheader
WYOMING, Mich. – The University of Northwestern Ohio baseball opened play for the 2016-17 season with its first ever fall contest being counted as an official game as the Racers traveled north to take on the Aquinas College Saints in a doubleheader.
UNOH (2-0, 2-0 WHAC) came out victorious in both events after a late rally led the Racers over the Saints (0-2, 0-2 WHAC) in game one with a 5-2 decision before the offensive activity carried into the second contest as the Racers took a 14-6 win.
Jeff Cardenas led the Racers at the plate with a 6-for-8 day at the plate which included a pair of doubles, runs, RBIs, and stolen bases. Rafael Lozada added the most run support with four RBIs which included a two-run home run in the fourth inning of game two while Junior Gomez made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot. However, it was Jonathan Rodriguez with the first homer of the season as he ripped a solo shot in the first.
Andres Medina (1-0) recorded the win after throwing two scoreless innings of relief in game one while Jacob Hulcher notched his first save of the year with a three-up, three-down ninth inning. Damon Proctor picked up the win in the second contest with 6.2 innings pitched while allowing just one run.
The two teams square off for a third contest at noon on Saturday, Sept. 24.
