Racers Stay Perfect with Sweep
LIMA, Ohio – After using the run rule to its advantage on Saturday afternoon, the University of Northwestern Ohio baseball team hosted the Davenport University Panthers in a doubleheader on Sunday to see which team would take the series.
UNOH (6-0, 6-0 WHAC) clinched the series with a 4-2 victory in game one before sweeping the Panthers (3-3, 3-3 WHAC) with a 6-4 decision to cap off the weekend. The 6-0 start is the best in program history to begin a season.
In game one, Damon Proctor (2-0) earned the win on the mound after he surrendered the first 13 Panthers he faced. He was replaced by Abrahan Flete in the top of the seventh who got the Racers out of a jam as he retired the next eight batters to earn his first save of the season.
Felix Correa led UNOH with three singles in four at-bats while stealing a base and scoring a run. Jeff Cardenas, Rafael Lozada, Junior Gomez, and Carlos Baerga, Jr. all notched a RBI.
The Panthers put up a quick three runs in the first frame of the series finale, but UNOH answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning before a Cardenas homer in the third evened the score. The Racers then took the lead in a two-run fourth inning off of back-to-back RBI doubles by Kyle Fisher and Jonathan Rodriguez scored Giuliano Montanez and Fisher.
Ryan Mose earned his first win of the year after throwing 4.1 innings of one-hit relief. Andres Medina notched his first save in 2.2 innings pitched.
UNOH travels to Ft. Wayne, Ind. to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors in a three-game series. The two WHAC teams will meet on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a standalone contest beginning at 1 pm followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, also at 1 pm.
