Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Indiana Tech
FT. WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Northwestern Ohio baseball team has already opened the 2016-17 season on a tear, and the Racers traveled to Indiana Tech as they looked to extend the best start in program history with a doubleheader on Saturday.
Behind a pair of nine-run victories, the Racers (8-0, 8-0 WHAC) did just that as they clenched the weekend series with the wins over the Warriors (5-3, 5-3 WHAC).
UNOH had a powerful showing at the plate in game one as the Racers knocked a quartet of home runs in the contest. Junior Gomez was responsible for two while Dayfran Ortiz and Felix Correa add one each.
Kyle Thomas (2-0) went eight innings on the mound and struck out six batters. In the ninth, Ross Cervantes picked up a pair of strikeouts to close the game.
Game two picked up where the first left off as UNOH tallied a quick four runs in the first followed by three more in the second for an early 7-2 lead. The Racers then scored a pair in both the sixth and the eighth along with adding a run in both the seventh and ninth innings.
Jeff Cardenas and Rafael Lozada added two more homers on the day for the Racers as both men were a triple shy of a cycle.
Damon Proctor (3-0) threw eight innings while allowing just six hits and striking out 12 Warriors. Similar to Cervantes in game one, Jacob Hulcher picked up a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to seal the win.
UNOH is set to finish the fall season with the final game of the series against Indiana Tech on Sunday, Oct. 9 with first pitch at 1 pm.
