Powerful Outings Lead to Doubleheader Sweep

LIMA, Ohio – After playing a pair on Saturday afternoon, the University of Northwestern Ohio and Saint Ambrose University baseball teams squared off for a second doubleheader in as many days at the St. Rita's Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Racers (14-7) recorded a pair of powerful outings as they recorded a sweep over the Fighting Bees (1-3) to claim the weekend series, 3-1. In game one, UNOH blanked SAU, 9-0, and followed it up with a 13-2 victory in the finale.

At the plate, UNOH recorded 15 hits in each contest while allowing a combined 11 over both games. The Racers recorded three extra-base hits in the contest which was highlighted by a leadoff home run by Rafael Lozada in the bottom of the second inning. Four runs were put across in the sixth to provide a comfortable margin for the Racers.

During the shutout, Mike Alexander (2-1) earned the victory while allowing just three hits and striking out an impressive 11 batters through six innings. Austin Gridley relieved Alexander in the top of the seventh to close the game during a non-save situation by surrendering all three batters.

UNOH continued to cruise at the plate in game two as the Racers scored five in the bottom of the first as three straight singles led off the inning before all three baserunners were knocked in via a powerful James Cardona grand slam.

Ross Cervantes (1-0) was credited with the victory on the mound after appearing as UNOH's third of five pitchers during 1.2 innings of relief. The senior left-hander entered the contest with a runner on second during the fourth and surrendered the next two batters to end the inning.

Blake Maines had one of the many impressive performances at the plate as he went 4-for-6, scored four runs, and recorded one RBI on the day.

The next scheduled series for the Racers is set for the weekend of March 4-5 as the squad travels to Georgetown, Ky. to take on the Georgetown College Tigers.
