GRAND RAPIDS, MI - UNOH had no trouble in game one picking up their first shutout of the season, 9-0, but had to battle into the ninth in game two to finish off the Golden Eagles, 10-5.
The first game of the day was highlighted by another sparkling performance from Michael Joyce on the mound. Joyce (3-0) threw the team's first complete game and first shutout of the season scattering seven hits while striking out eight and walking just one. He has worked 25.2 innings this season in six appearances without giving up an earned run. The Racers scored six of their runs in the first three innings before capping the 9-0 win with three in the seventh. Joskar Feliciano was perfect at the dish going 3-3, a season high, with two RBI. Drake Miller also finished with three hits in four at-bats driving in one while Eliomar Otero led the team with three RBI.
The Racers plated two in the first to begin game two adding one in the third, but Cornerstone tied the game with three in the bottom of three. UNOH strung together two doubles and two singles in their next at-bat to take back control of the game, 7-3. After the Golden Eagles got one back in the seventh, the Racers blew things open in the ninth thanks to three walks and a wild pitch that set up back-to-back singles that scored three and put them up 10-4. Cornerstone managed to get three hits in their final at-bat to score one, but Nick Soller struck out the final two batters to complete the opening day sweep.
Joskar Feliciano put together a six-hit day going 3-6 in game two with four runs driven in. Darius Freeman also recorded three hits in his five at-bats scoring three times with two stolen bases. AJ Buchman went four and two-thirds off his sixth start giving up three runs, two earned, off four hits but struck out eight and walked two. Jeremy Yurcak (1-1) earned the win with two innings pitched in relief giving up just one run and one hit with four strikeouts and two walks. Nick Soller picked up his first career save striking out four of eight batters face with one run given up on three hits.
UNOH returns home Sunday for a doubleheader against Rochester beginning at 12:00 PM.
