LIMA, OH - UNOH baseball split the first two games of a four-game series against Cleary on Saturday. The Cougars edged out a 3-2 ball game in the opener with the Racers holding off a furious comeback to win the nightcap, 5-4.
Cleary scored one in the first and one in the second while UNOH struggled to find consistent offensive production. The 2-0 score held into the sixth where the Racers finally broke through. Both runs came off one swing of the bat with Nolan Hull ripping his third home run of the season that tied the game at 2-2. With everything to play for in the final inning, The Cougars responded with their own solo shot to sneak in front 3-2 and the Racers were retired in order in the bottom to give Cleary the win.
Drake Miller and Devon Tukes both finished 2-3 in the game with Nolan Hull's two RBI leading the team.
Michael Joyce went four innings off the start allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Jeremy Yurcak tossed an inning in relief giving up two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jack Olberding threw one inning striking out all three batters he faced. Eliott Traver (1-2) took the loss after allowing the game-winning home run with two hits and two strikeouts.
UNOH got started first in game two thanks to a solo bomb off the bat of Devon Tukes who went dead center over the batters eye. A single, a hit batter and an error scored a second with Noah Matheson driving in a third with a sac fly to center. The Racers added another in their next at-bat after walk was followed by a Drake Miller RBI triple that put them on top 4-0 after four. In the top of the seventh, Clearly hit a lead-off homer before piecing together a two singles and three walks that tied the game at four. A two-out RBI double from Nolan Hull put the Racers in front for good holding on for a 5-4 win.
Hull finished 2-2 with one RBI with Drake Miller and Eliomar Otero both finishing 2-4 at the dish.
AJ Buchman pitched a strong six and a third innings allowing three runs off four hits while striking out ten and walking three. Wyatt Johnson gave up one run on one with with a walk in a third of an inning of work. Jeremy Yurcak (4-3) scalped the win with one a third innings on the mound giving up two hits with two strikeouts. Eliott Traver earned his league-leading sixth save of the season giving up one hit over an inning of work.
UNOH enters the final day of the regular season needing two wins or one win and a Concordia loss to earn a share of the regular season WHAC title. If both situations occur, the Racers will win the championship outright and earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Opening Round. UNOH and Cleary will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1:00 PM.
