LIMA, OH - The UNOH Pod of the WHAC Baseball Tournament has its final matchup set after UNOH defeated Madonna, 14-6, in game one on Thursday with the Crusaders eliminating Lawrence Tech, 10-9, in a ten inning game two.
The teams worked through two and a half innings with just two hits between them before Madonna struck first with a solo homer in the third. The Crusaders added a second in the fourth before UNOH got on the board with a RBI ground out in the fifth. However, the Crusaders looked to be in control of the game plating two more in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 lead after five. Seth Freeman finally got the Racer offense going with a two-RBI home run in the seventh before the team strung together four more hits to cap a six-run inning taking over the lead 7-4. The offense spilled over into the eighth with Darius Freeman ripping a two-RBI double followed by a two-run homer from Tyler Grigalis. After Madonna scored two in the bottom of the eighth, UNOH went to work again in the final frame with a Joskar Feliciano two-RBI single and a Darius Freeman sac fly that put them up 14-6 with three outs left to play. The Crusaders had a lead off walk to begin their at-bat, but a double play eliminated the opportunity sending the Racers to the Pod Championship on Friday.
Seth Freeman finished 3-5 in the game with two RBI with Tyler Grigalis, Nolan Hull and Tim Hanible all recording a multi-hit game.
Nick Johnson threw four innings off the start allowing four runs, three earned, off four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Jeremy Yurcak (5-3) was strong in relief giving up just one hits over two innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Jack Olberding picked up his first career save tossing the final two and two-thirds innings with two runs allowed on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The two teams will meet again on Friday for a fifth time this season with a trip to the WHAC Championship Series on the line. Madonna will have to defeat the Racers twice in the double-elimination tournament to make the trip. UNOH is 4-0 in in the previous meetings, outscoring the Crusaders 46-14.
Game one is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Friday morning with game two slated for 1:00 PM if needed.
