HOWELL, MI - After officially claiming the regular season championship on Wednesday, UNOH baseball opened the final weekend of the regular season with a split doubleheader on Saturday. The Racers won the opener against Cleary 3-1 but saw the Cougar offense heat up take the nightcap 10-1.
The two teams traded a run in the second inning of the first game with the UNOH run coming off three singles and the Cougars scoring on a triple and a single. The remainder of the offensive production came in the next at bat as the Racers singled, tripled and hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The teams combined to scatter just three more hits the rest of the game giving UNOH the win.
Sinjon Bobolia tossed the first two and two-thirds innings giving up one run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Will Myklebust (3-1) earned the decision after three and a third innings allowing two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Eliott Traver picked up his WHAC-leading sixth save of the season after retiring all three batters face to finish off the game.
The Cougars struck early in the nightcap putting two runs up in their first at bat. UNOH scored their only run with a two out double and single in the fourth but Cleary kept adding to the lead. After one in the fifth and two in the sixth, the Cougars blew the game open with five in the eighth giving them the split.
Devon Tukes was the only Racer to log multiple hits all day ending game two 2-3 at the plate.
Brayden Lybarger (7-2) took the loss after just two-thirds of an inning where he allowed two runs on one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Jeremy Yurcak pitched the final out of the first inning giving up one hit. Daniel Healy and Nick Soller each tossed two frames in middle relief. Healy didn't allow a hit but walked one while Soller gave up one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Zach Cabell, Nate Tappenden and Parker Close combined to finish the final three innings with seven runs scored on two hits with five combined walks and one strikeout.
UNOH will conclude the regular season on Sunday, April 27 when they travel to Siena Heights for a 1:00 PM doubleheader. The Racers defeated the Saints 11-6 and 19-5 when they last met less than two weeks ago.
