Healy Hurls Again, Racers Sweep No. 19 Indiana Tech
LIMA, OH - For the first time since 2015, UNOH baseball swept their season series with WHAC foe Indiana Tech earning a 1-0 win in game one and a 6-3 victory in game two.
The Racers rode another sparkling performance by reigning WHAC Pitcher of the Year, Daniel Healy (4-1), in game one. After the first two Warriors reached with a pair of singles, the sophomore slinger completely shut down his opposition allowing just one more hit and only four total base runners the rest of the game. Healy's win marks back-to-back complete game shutouts for the first time in his career with eleven strikeouts and just one walk over those 14 innings.
The lone run of the game came after consecutive two-out singles put Racer runners on the corners in the bottom of the third inning. A wild pitch on the next batter scored Dwayne Anderson from third giving UNOH what would become the winning run. Three other times the Racers got into scoring position but were denied adding to the lead each time.
Zach Grigalis and Tyler Huff combined for five of the team's seven hits going 3-3 and 2-3, respectively. Cesar Grau and Nolan Hull were responsible for the other two.
After a pitcher's duel in game one, the nightcap opened with offensive fireworks as each team cranked a solo home run. Indiana Tech's homer would end up being their only earned run of the game, however, as a couple defensive mistakes aided their second and third. Three straight singles in the home second put UNOH back on top but the two unearned runs scored in the third and fifth gave the Warriors the lead 3-2 through five and a half.
Eliomar Otero and Tyler Huff both doubled in that frame as the Racers lit the first crooked number of the day and swiped the lead back, 4-3. Otero joined with Zach Grigalis to work in another pair of scores with two outs in the sixth. UNOH loaded the bags in the eighth but a double play shut down the scoring opportunity. It was the last time either would threaten giving the Racers their first doubleheader sweep in conference play this season.
Former Perry standout, Ryan Yingst, was the beneficiary of timing to earn his first win with the program. Yingst took over from starter Zach Cabell in the fifth and picked up the final out of the inning. The Racers proceeded to take over the lead in the bottom half of that frame and held it through the end giving Yingst the decision. Cabell was one out away from qualifying for the win working a strong four and two-thirds innings. He gave up just one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Aidan Nugent, Carter Hicks and Noah Curi combined for two and a third innings with three total hits between them. The last two outs of the eighth and all three in the ninth went to another local product, Jordan Davis (Elida), who didn't allow a hit to pick up his third save of the year.
Zach Grigalis continued his offensive tear logging his third straight multi-hit game and his ninth in the last twelve. His hot March has helped him move into first in the conference and third in the country with a .522 batting average. During that stretch, Grigalis has blasted five home runs and four doubles while driving in 16 runs. Eliomar Otero finished 2-4 with one RBI and Cesar Grau went 2-4 as the only two other Racers to recorded more than one hit in game two.
UNOH will take a brief hiatus from conference play with a trip to IU-Kokomo on Wednesday, March 25 for a single, nine-inning contest. The Racers then get back into the WHAC with a four-game series against the team currently at the top of the standings, Aquinas, on Saturday and Sunday.
