UNOH Gets Swept in WHAC Opener

Fort Wayne, IN - UNOH (11-12, 0-2) began their 2023 slate of conference games with 5-4 walk off loss at (RV) Indiana Tech (22-4, 2-0). Game two saw the Warriors run rule the Racers in six 11-3.

 

Game 1: IIT 5 UNOH 4

The Warriors were up 4-0 before UNOH could light the board. It happened with two outs in the top of the fourth when the Racers went double-single-double to score two. Six of the next seven batters went down in order and UNOH struck again in the sixth. The Racers already set a program record in stolen bases less than halfway through the season and they used two more to score Anna Ankney from third cutting the deficit to one. After retiring the side in the bottom, UNOH had three outs to finish the comeback. An error and a ground out got the tying run to third and Sidney Unger did the job with a sac fly to left. It was the only Racer run of the inning setting up a 4-4 game in the bottom. A lead off single got the Warriors started and it was followed by a walk off double down the left field line for a 5-4 Indiana Tech win.

Zoe Johnson was responsible for two RBI in the game and Sidney Unger finished with one.

Carlie Hanes got the start and went two and a third innings giving up four runs off three hits with six walks. Jaylyn Mullenax (4-4) threw the final three and two thirds giving up just two hits and the final run while striking out one.

 

Game 2: IIT 11 UNOH 3 (6 Innings)

Game two was scoreless through two and a half with just two hits between the teams. Indiana Tech blew the game open with four runs in the home third but UNOH got one back in the fourth with a Zoe Johnson RBI double. Chloe Goulter cut the lead to one with a two-run homer in fifth, her second of the season. The Warriors answered a solo shot of their own in the bottom making it 5-3 heading into the sixth. The Racers went down in order and Indiana Tech took advantage. Four singles and a error gave the Warriors control 8-3 and it was finished off with a walk off three-run homer cutting the game short after six.

Chloe Goulter and Zoe Johnson were responsible for the team's three runs combined to go just 2-6 at the plate.

Carlie Hanes (6-5) got the start again and took the loss after five and a third innings that saw ten runs, eight earned, off ten hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jaylyn Mullenax finished the game for UNOH but didn't record an out. Mullenax was credited with just one hit and one earned run.

 

UNOH will have a day off before hosting UM-Dearborn in a double header Sunday, March 26, at 1:00 PM.
