Racers Survive Doubleheader at UM-Dearborn
ANN ARBOR, MI - UNOH used steady offensive production in a 7-3 win to start the day at UM-Dearborn. After going up 4-0 in game two, the Racers held off a furious Wolverine comeback and worked out a bases-loaded jam in the seventh for a 4-3 win.
The Racers opened the day with two runs in the first but couldn't get another across until the fifth. Tess Denning hit a two-RBI single in the fifth after UM-Dearborn scored one in the fourth and UNOH led 4-1 after five. A lead off single got the sixth started for the Racers before Anna Ankney smacked her fourth home run of the season. Zoe Johnson finished off the scoring with a two-out RBI double that put UNOH up 7-1 through six. A lead off single followed by a two-run shot cut into the lead in the final frame, but Carlie Hanes finished off the next three batters in order for the 7-3 win.
Hanes (9-5) pitched all seven innings allowing three runs off eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Zoe Johnson led at the dish going 3-4 with two RBI while Tess Denning finished 2-5 with a team high three RBI. Hailee Edgell and Sydney Shaffer both logged multi-hit games going 3-4 and 2-4, respectively.
A two-out, RBI single from Sydney Shaffer got the scoring started in inning two of the nightcap. The game didn't produce another hit for either team until the fifth inning. It came after back-to-back walks led off the inning followed by Shaffer who loaded the bases. Alexis D'Alexander and Anna Ankney linked consecutive singles that plated three and put the Racers up 4-0. UM-Dearborn got one back with a sac fly in the home fifth adding two more off a home run in the sixth. After UNOH came up empty in the final frame, the Wolverines worked the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom. Carlie Hanes forced a fly out on the next batter to get out of the jam and pick up her second save of the season.
Sydney Shaffer was the only Racer earning multiple hits going 2-2 with one RBI while Anna Ankney led the team with two. Karsyn McGlothen (11-3) picked up the win after five and a third innings of work. McGlothen allowed three runs off three hits with two walks and a season high five strikeouts. Hanes threw one and two-thirds giving up two hits with two strikeouts.
The second-place Racers will return home for a WHAC showdown against first-place No. 20 Madonna (30-3, 8-0) on Wednesday.
