BEVERLY HILLS, MI - After losing two games to Madonna on Wednesday, UNOH softball rebounded with a doubleheader sweep at Lawrence Tech on Saturday. The Racers scored ten runs in the first three innings of the day and held on for a 10-3 in game one. They had to overcome a deficit twice in the nightcap but ended strong with seven runs in the final two innings to complete the sweep, 11-6.
A sac fly and a double plated the first two runs of the day in the Racers' first at-bat. Anna Ankney and Tess Denning both went yard in the second with three and two-run shots, respectively. UNOH added three more in the third to take a comanding 10-0 lead after three. Lawrence Tech managed three runs in the fourth but were held to one hit over the final three frames giving the Racers a 10-3 win.
UNOH went up first in again in game two, but three runs for the Blue Devils in the second gave them their first lead of the day. Tess Denning knotted things up with one swing of the bat in the third and Anna Ankney put the Racers back on top, 4-3, with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Lawrence Tech came alive in the home fifth with back-to-back home runs followed by a third inside-the-park. The lead traded hands a final time in the sixth as UNOH opened the frame with three straight singles to load the bases. The bats stayed hot stringing together three more hits, including two doubles, and another sac fly that added five runs for the Racers. Two errors in the seventh assisted two more insurance runs but they weren't needed as the Blue Devils went down in order to end the game, 11-6.
Alexis D'Alexander was consistent at the plate all day earning five hits on six at-bats with three RBI. Tess Denning had a monster outing with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI on 4-8 hitting. Anna Ankney matched Denning's seven RBI going 3-7 on the day.
Carlie Hanes picked up the complete-game win to start the day allowing only one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Karsyn McGlothen started game two but worked just two innings giving up three runs on four hits with one walk. Kiya Benschoter threw two and two-thirds in relief with three runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one. Carlie Hanes (11-6) tossed the final two and a third innings earning her second win of the day. She gave up just two hits while striking out three. With her two wins, Hanes takes over the program's all-time wins record with 60 in her career (Aubrey Brunst - 59).
UNOH heads to Siena Heights (11-15, 2-6) on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
