Softball Goes 1-1 on Day One of WHAC Softball Tournament

SYLVANIA, OH - On the first day of the WHAC Softball Tournament, UNOH split their first two games and will now have to fight their way through the loser's bracket on day two. The two-seed Racers made quick work of their first matchup against seven-seed Cornerstone with a run-rule victory, 8-0, in five innings. In game two, three-seed Aquinas stormed back from a 5-1 deficit to upset UNOH 7-5.

 

Two errors and a walk aided a three-hit second inning for UNOH that saw them plate four for an early lead. The fourth produced three more thanks to two walks and two doubles giving the Racers a 7-0 lead. After working through another hitless Cornerstone frame, three straight singles scored one more run to seal an 8-0 win in five.

Payton Albright, Sydney Shaffer and Zoe Johnson all produced multiple hits with Johnson leading the team with four RBI.

Carlie Hanes (15-9) threw her third career no-hitter for her seventh complete game shutout of the season. Hanes struck out six and walked one over her five innings of work.

A lead off single and a Zoe Johnson home run opened the bottom of the first for UNOH has they took a quick 2-0 lead to start the game. A single and two sac bunts added a third in the second before Aquinas got their first run of the game in the top of the third. With two outs in the bottom, the Racers hit back-to-back doubles and a single that socred two and gave them a 5-1 lead after four. It didn't take long for the Saints to get back into the game plating three in the fourth to make a one run contest. It took until the final frame for Aquinas to take their first lead of the game, but it came at the right time with three runs in the top for a 7-5 advantage. UNOH put runners on first and second but left them stranded to fall into the losers bracket.

Dani Keighley went 3-4 in the game with Syndey Shaffer and Alexis D'Alexander both record two hits in the game. 

Carlie Hanes started game two and went three and a third innings giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Karsyn McGlothen (14-5) took the loss after an inning and two-thirds of relief. McGlothen allowed three runs, two earned, off two hits with one walk. Kiya Benschoter threw the final two innings with three runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

 

The double-elimination tournament will now force UNOH to win three games on day two to stay alive. Game one will be against eight-seed Cleary who fell to one-seed Madonna, 9-2, in round one before upsetting five-seed Indiana Tech, 10-8, in the loser's bracket. The winner of UNOH and Cleary will advance to play either three-seed Concordia or seven-seed Cornerstone.
