GRAND RAPIDS, MI - UNOH softball finished their weekend trip to Grand Rapids with a pair of victories over Aquinas. The Racers survived a tight extra inning contest in game one, 4-2, thanks to two late runs and followed up with a 5-0 shutout in game two.
An error led off the home first in game one and culminated with the Saints scoring the first run of the game. UNOH answered right back, though, and linked two singles with a triple in the top of the second to take over the lead 2-1. The game settled into a pitcher's duel from that point producing just four combined hits over the next five and a half innings. Only one of those hits belonged to Aquinas but it was enough to tie the game in the sixth inning forcing an extra frame to decide a winner. The Racers quickly broke the deadlock in the eighth after leading off with a single and a double adding one more for insurance. The Saints hit a lead off single but it was their last of the game going ground out, fly out, ground out to give UNOH the 4-2 win in eight.
Holly Alvoid, Anna Ankney and Hailee Edgell all finished 2-4 in the game with Alvoid logging the first game of her career with multiple extra base hits after hitting a double and a triple.
Karsyn McGlothen got the start and went five and two-thirds innings allowing two runs, one earned, on just two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Lanie Wooten (13-7) earned the win with two and a third innings of work with no walks, one hit, and two strikeouts.
The two teams each recorded just one hit over the first three frames of game two before the Racers broke through with consecutive two-out singles in the fourth to get on the board. Aquinas did their own work in the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't get a run across in their only threat of the game. UNOH would go on to score three in the fifth and capped the day with an Anna Ankney solo shot in the seventh, her team leading sixth home run of the year, to finish off the shutout victory.
Dani Keighley, Sydney Shaffer and Brenna Cobb each went 2-4 in game two led by Keighley's two RBI. Keighley also hit her 17th double of the season putting her on top of the WHAC and giving her a league best 27 extra-base hits.
Lanie Wooten (14-7) picked up her second win of the day tossing her third complete game shutout with five scattered hits, three strikeouts and one walk.
UNOH will now enter the final stretch of conference games playing eight straight at home to end the regular season. Concordia visits Lima for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16 followed by Siena Heights, Lourdes and UM-Dearborn.
