LIMA, OH - The long ball was on the menu Wednesday afternoon as UNOH and Concordia split a conference showdown. Four combined home runs were responsible for seven of the 14 total runs scored with the Cardinals stealing game one 5-4 and the Racers taking the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings.
Concordia struck first with a lead off solo shot in the top of the third on just their second hit of the game. That remained the only run of the game until the home fifth when Dani Keighley and Tess Denning ripped back-to-back home runs that scored three and one, respectively, put the Racers on top 4-1 after five. The Cardinals kept grinding and worked in two in the sixth and two in the seventh while holding UNOH just one hit over the two frames to steal the win 5-4.
Anna Ankney led the team going 3-4 with two doubles and Denning finished 2-4 with a double to go along with her home run.
Lanie Wooten tossed six innings allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk but it was Karsyn McGlothen (8-8) taking the decision with two unearned runs allowed on one hit over one inning of work.
The Cardinals hit first again in game two scoring one in their first at bat, but offense was at a premium as just one more run crossed the plate over the next four innings sending the game into the sixth with Concordia leading 2-0. Finally, UNOH got on the board thanks to another bomb from Dani Keighley, her second of the day, that scored two and tied the game after six. Neither team could threaten in the final scheduled inning sending the game into the eight still locked at 2-2. The Cardinals managed to get a runner aboard but were shut down quickly giving the Racers a second chance to finish off the game. Anna Ankney was hit by a pitch to lead off the at bat with a sacrifice bunt moving her into scoring position. With two outs, Sydney Shaffer delivered the walk off RBI with a shot down the right field line that easily scored Ankney and gave them a 3-2 win.
Keighley finished game two as the only Racer with multiple hits going 2-3 with two RBI and both her hits going for extra bases. She now leads the WHAC in home runs (7), doubles (18), extra base hits (30) and RBI (45).
Karsyn McGlothen started the nightcap and went five innings with two runs allowed on five hits with three walks. Lanie Wooten (15-7) picked up the win in relief tossing three innings of two-hit ball striking out one.
UNOH will continue their busy home week with two games against Siena Heights on Friday, April 18 followed by two more against Lourdes on Saturday.
