LIMA, OH - UNOH softball got started early in both ends of their home opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon picking up two wins over Bluefield, 6-1 and 10-2.
After the Rams went down in order to start the day, they helped UNOH get a runner on board with an error in right field. Susan Vokes stepped to the plate and made the defense pay ripping her first collegiate home run that put the Racers up 2-0 after one. Bluefield was next to score working one across with back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth, but they were answered promptly with three more Racer runs in the bottom.
With two outs, UNOH strung together two singles and a double followed by a double steal that resulted in another crooked number and a 5-1 lead after four. The offenses dried up over the final three innings producing just two total hits between but a double steal did enough to add a final run for UNOH as the Racers opened the day with a win.
Lanie Wooten (4-3) scattered six hits in her fifth complete game allowing one run and one walk while striking out five batters.
UNOH hung bookend five-spots in game two to finish off their first run-rule win of the year. Their first at bat produced a little of everything with three singles aided by a hit batter, a passed ball, a walk, and an error putting them up 5-0 after one. The Rams put up one in the second and one in the fourth cutting the lead to three, but UNOH finished the game early with five more in the home fifth.
A single and a walk put runners on before Paige Becker pushed the ball down the right field line earning her first double of the year and scoring the first run of the inning. Brenna Cobb and Tayler Braun brought in the next two followed by a Susan Vokes walk off double to left center field that scored the last two and ended the game in five innings.
Karsyn McGlothen (2-2) worked her first complete game of the season giving up two runs on just three hits, one earned, while walking two earning a career high eight strike outs.
Tayler Braun had a monster day from the lead off position going 7-8 over the two games with a triple, a RBI and four stolen bases. Susan Vokes continued her hot start to her freshman campaign hitting 3-5 with four RBI, two doubles and a home run. Morgan Piotrovsky ended the day 3-5 while Kimberly Hernandez and Paige Becker each went 2-6 with all three driving in two RBI each.
UNOH will play one more time before heading south for their annual trip to Florida in mid-March. The Racers head to Taylor for a doubleheader on March 7 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
