Florida National (FL)
MELBOURNE, FL - UNOH softball began their weeklong trip to Florida with a 4-3 loss to Florida National in eight innings but salvaged the first day with a 5-0 win over St. Mary-Woods in game two.
The Racers hit a double in each of the first two innings but it was the Conquistadors lighting the scoreboard first with a lead off solo home run in the top of the third. After they added a couple more in the frame, a Tayler Braun triple and a Susan Vokes single gave UNOH their first run of the game that made it 3-1 after three. The teams combined for five hits over the next three and a half innings with three of those credited to the Racers, but the score remained the same heading into the bottom of the seventh.
A lead off single and a walk put runners on the bags for Morgan Piotrovsky who ripped the team's fifth extra-base hit of the day that tied the game and forced extra innings. With the international tie breaker rule in effect, Florida National began the eighth with a runner on second and used small ball to bring her home and take the lead. The Racers tried to do the same when they came up to bat but back-to-back strike outs with a runner on third ended the game with a 4-3 loss.
Lanie Wooten (4-5) took the loss in her sixth complete game of the season allowing four runs on seven hits with four strike outs and a walk.
UNOH threatened in both the first and second innings of game two but didn't get a run across until the third thanks to an error. That single run held until the fifth when the Racers added a pair of runs with a RBI fielder's choice and a RBI single to take a 3-0 lead. After a two-out double and a walk in the sixth, Dominique Baker added two more after her single was mishandled by the center fielder and cushioned the lead at 5-0. The defense worked well for the Racers shutting down the Pomeroys all three times they put runners in scoring position to earn their first shutout victory of the season.
In her second start of the year, Chloe Scott (2-0) went the distance without a walk while scattering six hits and striking out one.
Tayler Braun enjoyed her first day in Florida going 5-9 over the two games with a double, a triple and two runs scored. Braun extended her team leading hit streak to 13 games with multiple in five of the last six. Hailee Edgell also had a strong start to the trip ending the day 4-8 at the dish with two doubles and two runs scored giving her multiple hits in three of the last four games. Susan Vokes pushed her hit streak up to eleven games going 3-4 with a double and two RBI while Kimberly Hernandez ended 3-7 and Cecilia Campbell went 2-7.
On day two of the Space Coast Spring Games, UNOH will take on Olivet Nazarene at 10:00 AM followed by Trinity Christian at 12:15.
