Racers Take Over First Place with Two Wins Against RCU
LIMA, OH - UNOH baseball took over sole control of first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) while pushing their winning streak up to 20 games thanks to a loss by Indiana Tech on Sunday and a doubleheader sweep for the Racers on Monday. Two dominating performances on the mound fueled the pair of victories for UNOH as they blanked the Warriors 4-0 in game one before run-ruling game two, 11-1.
The Racers rode a strong performance by Sinjon Bobolia in game one as he made it through six of the seven innings with just four scattered allowed. Two walks and two singles scored the first pair of runs for UNOH in the third inning. They strung together three more singles in the fifth to plate the second pair holding the Warriors at bay throughout.
Drake Miller, Noah Matheson and Tyler Huff all logged a multi-hit game with Seth Freeman leading with two RBI.
Bobolia (4-0) walked two and struck out two over his six frames to stay unbeaten on the season and lower his ERA to 2.16. Eliott Traver finished the final inning retiring the final three batters in order.
Game two was a struggle for Rochester from the onset as they walked four batters and hit another in the Racers' first at-bat giving up the first two runs without a hit. The Warriors scored their lone run in the top of the second but UNOH added two more in the bottom to go up 4-1 after two. The offense started to come alive in the home fourth with two doubles and a single starting off the frame and scoring one. UNOH ran a double steal twice with runners on the corners and successfully scored in both occasions adding a sac fly to their line in a four-run inning. The variety of scoring scenarios continued late into the game as the Racers expanded their lead two more times with a balk and a wild pitch in the sixth. One run away from finishing the scheduled 9-inning game early, the winning run got on base after Jacob Watson was hit by a pitch. The Warrior pitcher immediately attempted to pick Watson off at first but air mailed the ball way over the first basemen's head. As Rochester attempted to chase down the errant throw, Watson burned all the way around from first to score the walkoff run.
Eliomar Otero led the way hitting 2-4 at the dish with two RBI. Noah Matheson posted his third straight multi-hit game giving him multiple hits in a remarkable eleven of the last 14 games after going 2-3 with one RBI.
Zach Cabell made his first appearance of the season and worked through an inning and two-thirds with two hits and one unearned run given up. Will Myklebust (1-1) took over in the second and dazzled over four and a third innings. Myklebust struck out eight of the 15 batters he faced without surrending a hit and walking just one. Josh Mauney made his sixth appearance in the last eight days to finish off the final inning giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout to lower his season ERA to 1.74.
The Racers will be off until Saturday, April 5 when they open a five-game road trip at UM-Dearborn. UNOH will then head to (RV) Indiana Tech on Sunday followed by a single non-conference bout against Saint Francis next Wednesday.
