Men's Basketball Picks up First Win at Oakland City
OAKLAND CITY, IN - UNOH played from behind most of the first half but exploded for 46 points in the second, their highest second half output of the season, to flip the game and pick up their first win, 73-69, against Oakland City at the Dunn Hospitality Group Classic.
The Racers led for just 2:34 of game time in the first half and trailed at the break 32-27. They fell behind by 13 with 14:10 left to play and continued to trail by double-digits halfway through the period. The UNOH offense came alive over the next five minutes busting out a 19-2 run to take a 60-53 lead with five minutes left to play. The Mighty Oaks managed to cut the lead to one with just 14 seconds left, but the Racers held off the run to hold on 73-69.
Jayden Priddy-Powell led all scorers with a season high 19 points off the bench. Priddy-Powell was 6-9 (67%) from the field, 3-5 from long range and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Ryan Archey added 16 points and five rebounds with Landon Sprigler and Quinton Monroe chipping eleven points each.
The two teams were identical from the field with both shooting 43% as a team. UNOH held Oakland City to just 14% from outside while shooting 38%. The Racers saw a boost thanks to 35 points off the bench to 18 for the Mighty Oaks.
"I'm proud of the way our guys competed tonight. We did a much better job taking care of the ball," said head coach Richard Westerlund. "Our second unit was key in this win going on a 19-2 run to give us the lead. Our guys showed our toughness and connectiveness tonight. We know we have to continue to get better, but we wlove when the result is rewarded in the process.
UNOH will wrap up their early non-conference schedule when IU-Kokomo visits The Garage on November 14 at 7:00 PM with WHAC play beginning November 18 at Cornerstone.
