LIMA, OH - UNOH men's basketball suffered their second heartbreaking defeat of the week on Saturday losing at the buzzer to Cornerstone, 86-84.
After a tight first half that saw the Racers carry a slim two-point margin into the break, UNOH opened the second with an 11-2 run that gave them their largest lead of the day less than three minutes into the half. The Golden Eagles stormed back with a huge 17-3 run over the next five minutes that put them back on top 60-56 with 11:53 to play. The lead stayed within two possessions the rest of the game but it took until the 3:28 mark for the Racers to pull level again.
The teams traded a couple baskets before free throws put Cornerstone up by three with just 28 seconds left to play. In the next UNOH possession, Antonio King was left all alone from deep and hit nothing but net for his fifth three-pointer of the game that locked the teams at 84-84 with 19 seconds on the clock. The Golden Eagles came out of a timeout and fired the final shot of the game that hit the rim with two seconds left but rolled around the entire ring and fell through as the buzzer sounded.
King was a force offensively for UNOH scoring a game high 34 points, his fourth 30-point performance of the season, going 14-27 from the field and 5-9 from outside. Grant Pikkaart put in another efficient shooting performance missing just one shot of any kind all day. His 22 points were a new career high topping his previous best set last week. He finished 8-9 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe adding five rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals to his line. Over the last four games, Pikkaart is shooting 73% from the field and is averaging 17.5 points per game. Caleb Chapman put up his second double-double in the last four games scoring twelve with a game high ten rebounds and is has averaged 17 points and 9.5 rebounds per game during that stretch.
UNOH is one game back from the final spot in the WHAC Tournament with two games left to play. The Racers will try to keep their post season hopes alive when they host Lourdes on Wedensday, February 18.
