Men's Golf Opens Spring with Third-Place Finish

THOMSON, GA - UNOH men's golf began the spring half of the season with a third-place finish at the UNOH Southern Kickoff played at Belle Meade Country Club in Georgia.

The Racers sat on top of the field at the end of day one after rounds of 299 and 298 put them five strokes ahead of second place Rio Grande. Both teams had a difficult second day with UNOH scoring 320 as a team and the Red Storm carding 315 as the two dropped into a tie for third at 917. UNOH also competed a B-Team in the tournament that finished just four strokes behind the two with rounds of 321, 307 and 316.

Senior Guillermo Garron highlighted the tournament for the Racers finishing in a three-way tie for third place in the field of 53. Garron was tied for first after the first two rounds with a 1-over 145 but was a victim of a tough day two that saw him shoot 7-over par to score a total of 224.

Four Racers ended just outside the top ten as A-Team participants Jose Luis Vargas and Oliver Rogers landed even with Jordan Johnstone and Oscar Lind of the B-Team at 232. Vargas shot 75, 73, 84 and Rogers carded rounds of 79, 73 and 80 while Johnstone went 76, 79, 77 and Lind finished 82, 73, 77.

Luke S. Turner earned a top 15 finish shooting 76, 78 and 79 for a 233 and former Wayne Trace standout Kyle Sutton rounded out the A-Team scoring four strokes back with a 237.

Adrian Martin ended in a tie for 19th as part of the B-Team with a 235 followed by Bruno Boado and Alfie Baldwin with scores of 247 and 251.

UNOH also had three players compete as individuals led by Parkway product Roman Leszinske's 242. Bernardo Umana and Jonathan Schlenker rounded out the Racers' scoring with a 256 and 259, respectively.

Words from Coach West: I am very proud of Guillermo and his start to the spring season. The growth we have seen in his game each year is outstanding; dropping a full shot each season since he was a freshman four short years ago. We also want to thank Belle Meade Country Club for hosting us and allowing a great place to get some awesome work in outside to start our spring season. The guys worked hard this week and will take away the lessons learned and great preparation to help us have a strong spring.

UNOH will be back on the links next Monday, March 30 for the two-day Patriot Invitational played at Crooked Creek Golf Club in London, Kentucky.
