Racers Finish Third at Patriot Invitational
LONDON, KY - UNOH men's golf earned their second third-place finish in as many tournaments to open the spring half of their schedule finishing behind No. 19 Cumberlands A and B teams at the Patriot Invitational.
The Racers shot 298 and 292 on the first day of the tournament sitting second in the field of ten teams, but they fell three strokes behind the Cumberlands B-Team on day two to drop one spot into third with a final score of 886, just one back from the Patriots.
UNOH was led again by Guillermo Garron who continued his consistant march through the season with his second third-place result in two spring outings and his fifth top five in seven total events. Garron shot even-par 72 in round one followed by a 2-under 70 to sit fourth in the field of 59 after day one. A 2-over 74 was enough to jump him into a three-way tie for third ending the 54-hole tournament even with a 216. His strong start to the spring has shaved almost a full stroke off his season average and moves into the team lead at 72.94.
Oliver Rogers picked up his third top ten with even scores in the first and third rounds and a 2-over 74 in round two putting him two strokes back from Garron in seventh. Luke S. Turner and Jose Luis Vargas finished with a 226 and 227, respectively, highlighted by Turner's third sub-par round in the second. Oscar Lind rounded out the team scoring with a 236 but was surpassed by Adrian Martin who competed as an individual and used a 2-under 70 in round one to carry out his lowest 54-hole performance of the season with a 229.
Words from Coach West: Guillermo continues to play with such poise and maturity. He has always been a strong ball striker and I love the head space he is in right now. I am also very proud of Oliver. We have been talking and working with him on the mental challenges golf provides and playing with a clear head. He's a guy with so much natural talent, so it was great to see him have a very solid tournament. Great things are ahead for this team.
UNOH will be off for two weeks before returning to the links at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee for the Music City Collegiate on April 13-14.
