COLUMBIA, KY - UNOH men's soccer ended the LWC Showcase on Monday, September 9 with a 1-0 win over No. 25 Lindsey Wilson.
The only goal of the match came in the 42nd minute on the last shot of the first half for either team. The Racers went end-to-end off a goal kick thanks to a headed through ball from Reece Benjamin on his first touch that fed Ryan Hennessy in full stride coming in from the outside. Hennessy fought off a defender towards the endline and put the ball behind a charging keeper to put UNOH on top. Both teams created chances in the second half but when the final horn sounded the Racers' first half goal was enough to take the win, 1-0.
"I really don't think I can point out one player today because it was truly a collective team effort," stated head coach Tyler Brock following the match. "The guys that started set the tone and the guys that came off the bench raised that level. To come to a place like Lindsey Wilson with 23 new players on a roster of 27, including 18 true freshmen, it says a lot about the character and the work ethic of this team"
UNOH held the Blue Raiders to just four shots on goal over 90 minutes with keeper Alexandre Torres (2-1-1) making saves on all four, including three in the second half to save the clean sheet.
"I'm so proud of this group of guys," continued Brock. "We've come a long way in a very short amount of time. We still have a long way to go, but this game will be a good stepping stone for us. If the guys can play with this type of passion and effort while cleaning up some of the technical and tactical mistakes, I think we're going to be very successful this year. We just have to keep grinding and stay humble."
The grind will continue on the road for the Racers with the WHAC opener played at Madonna on Saturday, September 14.
