Men's Soccer Scores Early and Often in 5-2 Win at RCU
WASHINGTON, MI - UNOH men's soccer found pay dirt right out of the gate and continued to pour on the goals running away to a 5-2 win over Rochester Christian.
It took less than 30 seconds for the Racers to light the score board linking on their first possession to take the lead. Pablo Archilla found Jayson Janofski on the left side of the field who fed the ball through two defenders to Natxo Sanchez. Sanchez tracked down the ball behind the final defender and set it across the box on the ground past the goal keeper. Luka Heins was the benefactor of the keeper being out of position and finished into an open net. Almost 30 minutes went by before UNOH struck again thanks to a long ball from Zakariya Shabir from the back line that found Leandro Sain in space behind the Warrior defenders. Sain gathered his possession and went one-on-one with a charging keeper poking it around and into the back of the net.
Rochester Christian was the first to score in the second half thanks to a foul inside the penalty box that set up a converted penalty kick. UNOH added two more goals in a span of two minutes to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The third came in the 66th minute after a weak clearance on a Racer free kick that landed just outside the box. Luka Heins laid up to Ognjen Stanic who took one touch and rocketed the ball from 20 yards out past a diving keeper. The fourth happened in the 68th minute with Leonard Assouan threading a through ball between two defenders in the box finding Natxo Sanchez in stride who struck it first time giving the keeper no chance. For good measure, the Racers added one more in the 80th minute on another long ball from behind midfield into space behind the defenders. Both Assouan and the Rochester keeper gave chase but it was Assouan winning the race and taking advantage of the keeper out of position again. Assouan passed the ball around and chased it down himself, tapping it into an open net. The Warriors managed to get one back in the 85th minute off a corner kick set piece, but was nothing more than consolation as the Racers finished off a convincing 5-2 win.
Leonard Assouan, Natxo Sanchez and Luka Heins all scored and assisted with Sanchez leading the team with three of five shots on goal. As a team, UNOH racked 30 total shots putting 17 on target, both season highs. Alexandre Torres (3-1-1) made six saves over 90 minutes to earn the win.
UNOH heads to Ferry Field next to take on Concordia Wednesday, September 25 at 3:00 PM before returning home to face Lourdes on Saturday.
