Women's Basketball: Racers Complete Season Double of Madonna
LIVONIA, MI - UNOH (11-11, 6-9) was looking to avoid a stumble when they headed to Livonia to take on the league's bottom team, Madonna (1-21, 0-17). The Crusaders scored the first four points of the game, but didn't lead again as the Racers opened up in the second half for a 69-43 win. The win pulls the series record even at 13-13 but is the Racers' seventh in the last nine meetings.
The game stayed tight throughout the first quarter, but UNOH scored the last four of the frame to go up 18-12 heading into the second. Points were at a premium in the second with just 14 points scored between the two teams. The erractic scoring was split down the middle, however, and the lead remained at six heading into the break. Again Madonna scored the first points of the quarter, but the Racers responded with a 13-0 run that included three straight long range daggers from Ana Montero Sanz (SO/Madrid, Spain) to blow the game open. UNOH continued to control and pull away taking a 49-31 into the final stanza. Consistant offense and tough defense helped the Racers keep the Crusaders at bay as they rolled to a 26-point victory.
Ana Montero Sanz led all players with a career high 27 points, ten better than her prevous high. Montero shot 7-13 (54%) from the field, 5-7 (71%) from outside and 8-8 from the charity stripe, all career highs. Jada Haines (SR/Akron, Ohio) added 14 points with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Mar Marata Crespo (SR/Girona, Spain) and Kalea Kruser (SR/Madison, Wisconsin) each finished with eleven points in the game. Marata pulled down a game high eleven boards to pick up her third double-double of the season while Kruser finished one rebound short of her third.
Both teams grabbed 36 boards, but the Racers converted 14 turnovers into 24 points giving up just six.
The win gives UNOH their eleventh of the season, the program's most since 2016-17, and the Racers will look to make it twelve when they return home on Saturday, February 4, to face UM-Dearborn.
