Women's Basketball Seizes Valentine's Day Victory in Overtime
LIMA, OH - UNOH women's basketball controlled their game against Cornerstone for three quarters Saturday afternoon but had to fend off the Golden Eagles in overtime to pick up a 77-73 win. The Racers are now 14-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points and 9-1 in games decided by fewer than ten points.
UNOH jumped out to a quick 16-2 lead and remained in front until the final quarter of regulation. The first basket of the fourth tied the game 50-50 and Cornerstone took their first lead of the night less than a minute later, 53-52. After trading the lead four times, the Golden Eagles fired off a quick 7-0 spurt that gave them their largest lead of the day, 64-59, with 3:22 left to play.
The Racer defense locked down and kept Cornerstone without another point through the end of regulation including a Lori Huffman block on what could've been the game winning shot to force overtime. UNOH scored the first five points of extra time and maintained their advantage through the final horn to pull into a three-way tie for sixth place in the WHAC.
Sanaiiya Gray led all scorers with a career high 24 points while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two more shots. Gray has already set the single season blocks record with 61 and moves into second place all time as just a freshman.
Valentine's Day was even more special for fellow freshman Jordan Mueller who put together one of the most complete performances of any Racer this season. Mueller's 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists all mark new career highs while also matching her best of the season with three steals.
Olivia Thompson and Brooke Asher chipped in 16 and eleven points, respectively while Lori Huffman rounded out the team's scoring with six points and a game high twelve rebounds.
With two games left in the regular season, tournament seeding is still on the line. UNOH could see themselves finish as high as fifth or as low as eighth in the final WHAC standings with just one game separating four teams. The Racers will host second place Lourdes on Wednesday, February 18 before finishing at UM-Dearborn on Saturday.
