Racers Rebound with Clean Sheet Over USF

LIMA, OH - After taking their first loss of the season one week ago, the Northwestern Ohio women's soccer team rebounded with a 2-0 win over St. Francis (Ill.) at Racer Stadium.

The first 45 was a virtual stalemate with neither team able to find the front foot. The two sides combined for seven total shots in the first half but never truly threatened the goal with the game scoreless into the break.

The pace increased when the teams took the field again with shots coming on both ends in the first ten minutes. Finally, in 58th minute, Holly Tyrrell found Ashley Wilson on a cross and Wilson finished with a sliding shot past the keeper. The Saints tried to answer right back but were denied twice in the next two minutes. Those two chances would be the last of the match for St. Francis as UNOH locked down with the lead. Despite the Racers emphasizing their defensive end, they never stopped pressing offensively. In the span of five minutes, UNOH put three shots on target, including one that beat the keeper but was saved by a defender, while earning three corner kicks during the same span. The Racers threw the knockout blow on their third of three corners in that stretch. Patricia Blazquez stepped up to take the kick and bent it around the post and into the opposite top corner for her first career goal.

UNOH finished with a slight edge in shots (12-9) but a significant advantage on corner kicks (6-2).

Mireia Queralt (1-1-1) made four saves in the match, giving UNOH their first shutout of the season and the first of her career.

The Racers hit the road next for their first of three away at No. 4 Marian on Wednesday, September 13.
