LIMA, OH - UNOH volleyball battled Aquinas tough in their first match of the day, forcing extra points in three of the four sets played, but ended up falling 3-1. The Racers responded with a 3-0 win over Cumberland in the day's final matchup.
Aquinas 3 UNOH 1 (30-28, 19-25, 27-25, 26-24)
UNOH led the early portion of game one before Aquinas went on a 9-1 run to go up 16-11. The Racers stormed back with a 9-3 run of their own and went back up 20-19. From there, the game went back and forth with UNOH staving off four set points before Aquinas finally scored two in-a-row to win 30-28. The second game stayed tight with no more than three points seperating the teams until the Racers hit the 20-point mark. UNOH ended on a 6-1 run to take the set 25-19. The Saints held a 10-6 lead early in game three but the Racers put together another big run, 9-2, to take over 15-12. The first set point belonged to UNOH up 24-20, but Aquinas finished 7-1 to win 27-25 and go up 2-1. Game four stayed close throughout and saw late ties at 20, 21 and 24 with the Saints taking the final two again for a 26-24 win.
All together, the match tallied 40 ties and 20 lead changes over the four sets with the two teams combining to hit .236 with 115 kills.
Abigail Martin led all players with 17 kills on 42 swings, her sixth straight double-digit outing. Elli Roetgerman set a new program record for a four-set match hitting .750 with twelve kills on 16 attacks and no errors. Logan Thomas finished with eleven kills on 37 swings with just three errors (.216). Taylor Ruest was the fourth Racer in double figures scoring twelve points off seven kills, two aces, four block assists and one solo block.
Madelyn Hampton set a new career mark with 42 assists adding twelve digs. Aubree Ricketts finished with a game high 23 digs.
UNOH 3 Cumberland 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-15)
The first game of the final match was a game of runs. The first big run belonged to Cumberland, 10-3, with UNOH answering 11-3. Both teams traded 4-0 streaks before things settled down for the final eight points with the Racers finishing it off 25-22. Game two went back and forth early with the longest run of just three points before the Phoenix took a 18-15 lead late. UNOH rallied to outscore Cumberland 10-4 down the stretch and went up 2-0 with another 25-22 win. The Racers found their groove in game three using runs of 6-1, 8-1 and 6-1 to finish off the day 25-15.
UNOH held the Phoenix to just 28 kills and a .070 hitting percentage while hitting .239 as a team with 40 kills.
Abigail Martin led all players with ten kills for her sixth straight double-figure performance, the longest streak of her career. Logan Thomas finished with a game high 11.5 points, her 21st double-digit point outing in 28 games this season, with nine kills, two aces and a block assist while hitting .400 for the match.
Madelyn Hampton earned her fourth consecutive double-double with a game high 25 assists and 13 digs. Aubree Rickets' 17 digs also led all players.
